Project A1: Activation and Stabilization of Small Molecules by Rare-Earth Compounds

DFG Research Areas: Condensed Matter Physics, Molecular Chemistry, Physical Chemistry

The aim of the project is the activation of small molecules by using reactive rare-earth compounds. We will develop new and more efficient rare-earth-based reducing and oxidation reagents and subsequently understand their reactivity and bonding properties towards different ligands and substrates featuring mainly soft donor atoms. In contrast to previous work, we will go beyond established synthetic pathways. Due to the high sensitivity of the Ln-based materials and the complexity of the spectroscopic experiments, the complement expertise of both PIs combined with access to suitable instrumentation is paramount for the project.
